Plot summary
While the symphony conductor Sir Alfred de Carter is away in his native England, he asks August Henshler, his brother-in-law, to keep an eye on Daphne, his much younger wife. August takes the casual request too seriously and hires a private detective, Sweeney, to follow her. Alfred returns, learns about the arrangement and is angry. August hands him the investigator's report, but Alfred tears it up unread and throws August out. A detective on the hotel staff then hands the torn report back to him.

- The film's release was held back to avoid any backlash over the July 1948 suicide of actress Carole Landis, who was rumored to have had an affair with Rex Harrison and to have killed herself after he refused to divorce his wife and marry her. Harrison discovered her body at her home.
- Studio attorneys warned Preston Sturges that his conductor Sir Alfred de Carter was too close to the real English conductor Sir Thomas Beecham and told him to tone down the parallels, yet some reviewers still noted the similarity.
- Preston Sturges wrote the screen story in 1932, the idea coming to him from a melancholy song on the radio while he was writing a comic scene, and Fox, Universal and Paramount all rejected the script during the 1930s.
- Sturges saw Ronald Colman as the conductor in 1938, later wanted Frances Ramsden as Daphne, and by the time casting began wanted James Mason for the conductor and Gene Tierney as his wife.
- In February 1949, William D. Shapiro, who claimed to be an independent film producer, sued Fox and Sturges, saying the film's story was plagiarized from an unproduced screen story by Arthur Hoerl that Shapiro had meant to produce, with composer Werner Heymann as the supposed connection.
