Plot summary
Giant monsters live alongside humans, and the monsters wrestle professionally, with each city represented by one fighter. Tentacular, the shark-like champion of Stoker-on-Avon, becomes world champion and then announces that he will compete for Slitherpoole instead. Stoker is told it must find a new wrestler or lose its stadium and the revenue it brings. Winnie Coyle, an enthusiast of the sport, sets out to find one. At an underground fight she meets Rayburn Jr., the son of Rayburn Sr., a former world champion, competing as Steve the Stupendous. Winnie interferes, and he wins instead of losing on purpose as the woman who runs the matches intended. She threatens him over the money she lost, and Winnie offers to train him for official matches.
