Bill Maynard
Biography
Bill Maynard was a comedian and actor from England who started out in variety during the 1950s, using a stage name before moving into repertory theater and television. His first TV broadcast came in 1953, and he later worked with Terry Scott on a television series. He placed fourth in Britain's 1957 Eurovision Song Contest heat and spent part of the 1960s on Tyne Tees Television's One O'Clock Show news team. In the 1970s he moved into acting, taking roles in television plays such as Paper Roses and Kisses at Fifty. He led the sitcoms Oh No It's Selwyn Froggitt and its sequel Selwyn, then starred as Fred Moffat in The Gaffer. His film work included five Carry On movies, among them Carry On Dick (1974), and the Confessions comedies. From 1992 to 2000 he played Claude Jeremiah Greengrass in Heartbeat, reprising the role in The Royal in 2003.
