Plot summary
The Muppets perform their revue Manhattan Melodies for a graduating class at Danhurst College, and the enthusiastic response sends them to Broadway. In Manhattan, a first meeting with a producer ends when police arrest him as a con artist. Over months of trying, other producers turn them down, and the group's money and spirits run low. When Kermit snaps at them, the others decide they are holding him back and agree to split up and look for work elsewhere, leaving Kermit on his own in the city. Kermit will not abandon the show and finds help from diner owner Pete, Pete's daughter Jenny, and the rats who work there, led by Rizzo.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Frank Oz's planned guest-star list included Dustin Hoffman, Steve Martin, Michael Jackson, Lily Tomlin, Richard Pryor and Laurence Olivier. Hoffman was to play a Broadway producer doing an imitation of producer Robert Evans, but dropped out fearing the role would offend Evans, and the other big names followed, forcing Oz and David Misch to rewrite most of the dialogue.
- Oz rejected the first draft, titled The Muppets: The Legend Continues and written by Muppet Caper screenwriters Jay Tarses and Tom Patchett, as "way too over jokey". Encouraged by Jim Henson, Oz then revised the screenplay himself to develop the characters and their relationships.
- The Muppets Take Manhattan was the first film Frank Oz directed on his own; he had previously co-directed The Dark Crystal with Jim Henson.
