Plot summary
The ship taking Richard and Emmeline Lestrange to San Francisco is about to explode, and the two children, nine and seven years old, are rushed into a lifeboat with Paddy Button, the galley cook, while Richard's father, Emmeline's uncle, leaves in another. The boats are separated in the chaos, and Paddy, Richard and Emmeline drift with nothing to eat or drink until they come upon an uncharted tropical island. Paddy teaches the children to fish, hunt and build, and declares one side of the island out of bounds to them. He also warns them against eating the scarlet berries, which he says are deadly.

- Brooke Shields was 14 when she made the film, and all of her nude scenes were performed by the film's 32-year-old stunt coordinator, Kathy Troutt; many of her topless scenes were shot with her hair glued to her breasts. Atkins was 18 and performed his own nude scenes.
- Filming on Nanuya Levu featured an iguana then unknown to the island: herpetologist John Gibbons had just discovered it on nearby Yadua Tabu, and word from an associate who watched the film and spotted a strange lizard confirmed a second population, leading Gibbons to describe the Fiji crested iguana in 1981.
- Brooke Shields was cast as Emmeline Lestrange on the strength of Pretty Baby; Jodie Foster auditioned for the same role but was turned down, Kelly Preston also auditioned, and Diane Lane was offered the part but turned it down.
- Brooke Shields won the inaugural Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress for the film, which was nevertheless a commercial success, grossing $58.8 million on a $4.5 million budget and becoming the ninth-highest-grossing film of 1980 in North America.
