Plot summary
In 1890s Italy, the town of Monte Athena prepares for the wedding of Duke Theseus and Hippolyta. Hermia's father Egeus asks the Duke to enforce his promise of Hermia's hand to Demetrius, and Theseus gives her four days to marry Demetrius, enter a convent or die. Hermia and Lysander, forbidden to wed, agree to slip away into the forest, and Hermia tells her friend Helena. Helena loves Demetrius and passes the plan on to him, then follows him into the woods. There the fairy rulers Oberon and Titania are locked in a quarrel, and Oberon's sprite Puck carries a flower whose juice makes a sleeper fall in love with the first person seen on waking. A troupe of townsmen, led by Peter Quince and including Nick Bottom, takes its rehearsal into the same forest.
