Plot summary

Paul Matthews, a lonely biochemist, carries an unrequited crush on Diane Farrow, a comparative psychobiologist at his workplace. His friends Dave, Jeff, and Ron take him to Madame Ruth, a gypsy on 34th and Vine, who reads his palm, finds no romance there, and dabs Love Potion No. 8 onto paper with instructions to dilute and drink it. Paul doubts its scientific worth and throws it away. His cat gets into the trash, licks the potion, and meows, and cats from all over the neighborhood come running. Paul takes the bottle to Diane for analysis; after a female chimp sets a male chimp off, they work out that the potion makes the drinker attractive to the opposite sex by voice alone for four hours. They divide it into spray bottles and test it on themselves.
