Plot summary
When the Germans close in on Paris in 1940, Kitty de Mornay, a wealthy American, quarrels with her French husband Andre, who thinks she takes the danger too lightly. She and her English friend Emmeline Quayle, called Emmy, leave the city too late and cannot get away. At a country inn run by Renard the two women meet a wounded English flyer, Lieutenant William Gray, whom the innkeeper can no longer hide. They put Gray in their car and head back to Paris. A flat tire brings Captain Kurt von Weber of the Gestapo to their rescue, and he drives them through the checkpoints himself and leaves his card. In Paris they hide Gray in Emmy's apartment, getting him past her concierge, Madame Martin.
