Richard Ryen
Biography
Hungarian-born actor Richard Ryen began his career in German theater and film. Born in Hungary, he worked on stage and became a respected director at the Munich Kammerspiele. His screen debut came in the 1932 comedy Die verkaufte Braut, and he followed it with a small part in Must We Get Divorced? (1933) and three more German films in 1934. After moving to Hollywood in October 1938, he adopted the surname Ryen and was often assigned Nazi characters, a pattern that kept him employed during the war years. His best remembered screen role was Colonel Heinze in Casablanca (1942). Later credits included The Constant Nymph (1943), his first credited American film, The Cross of Lorraine (1943), and Paris Underground (1945). He later acted on the American stage and took guest engagements in Basel, Switzerland, then worked as a freelance writer. He died in 1965.
