Gracie Fields
Biography
Gracie Fields, born Grace Stansfield in Rochdale, Lancashire, was a British actress, singer and comedian. She first appeared on stage as a child in 1905 and made her variety debut at the Rochdale Hippodrome in 1910. Her career took off with the revue Mr Tower of London, which brought her to the West End. She recorded for His Master's Voice; My Blue Heaven, her first release, sold 500,000 copies in 1928. The song Sally, written for her debut film Sally in Our Alley (1931), became her theme, and the movie was a box office success. During World War II she entertained troops with ENSA. After the war she headlined the London Palladium, hosted a BBC radio show, and in 1956 was the first actress to play Miss Marple on screen. She won a Sylvania Award and an Emmy nomination. She was made a CBE in 1938 and a DBE in 1979, and died that year.
