Francis Lederer
Biography
Francis Lederer was an Austro-Hungarian-born American actor whose career began on European stages before he settled in Hollywood. Born in a working-class suburb of Prague, he trained at the Academy of Music and the Academy of Dramatic Art, and began his stage career as an apprentice at the New German Theater. He toured Moravia and central Europe as a matinee idol and played Romeo in a Max Reinhardt production of Romeo and Juliet, then appeared in G.W. Pabst's Pandora's Box and Atlantic (1929). In Hollywood he played a playboy in Midnight (1939), and Edward G. Robinson praised his work in Confessions of a Nazi Spy (1939). Later films included The Diary of a Chambermaid (1946), Million Dollar Weekend (1948) and Terror Is a Man (1959), and he played Dracula in The Return of Dracula (1958). He acted in theater and television, reprising the role in a 1971 episode of Night Gallery.
