Biography

Lois January was an American actress and singer whose screen work consisted largely of small roles in 1930s B-movies. Born in McAllen, Texas, she trained in dance at the Denishawn school and appeared in Los Angeles stage productions. Her first credited part came in the 1933 short UM-PA. She often played the heroine in westerns, with leading men such as Johnny Mack Brown and Tim McCoy. The reissue of The Pace That Kills (1935) as Cocaine Fiends gave her wider exposure, and she was probably most famous for playing the manicurist in the Emerald City of The Wizard of Oz. Her stage credits included Yokel Boy (1939) and High Kickers (1941). After her starring roles faded in the mid-1940s, she continued in smaller parts, including television series from 1960 through 1987 and a final role in the 1987 television movie Double Agent. She died in 2006.
