Shemp Howard

Biography

Shemp Howard, born Samuel Horwitz in Brooklyn in 1895, was an American comedian and actor. He entered show business in the early 1920s as part of Ted Healy's roughhouse stage act, where he performed alongside Moe and Larry Fine. He left Healy in 1932 and built a solo career in film comedy, starting with short subjects at Vitaphone in Brooklyn and later starring in his own series. After moving to the West Coast in 1937, he took supporting roles at Columbia and Universal and worked with W. C. Fields. He returned to the Three Stooges in 1946 and remained with the team until his death in 1955. With Moe and Larry he made 77 short subjects, and the trio also appeared on live television and in the feature Gold Raiders (1951).
