Plot summary
Christopher Gill runs a Broadway theater and cannot let go of his mother, a stage actress who has died. He preys on lonely middle-aged women, taking on disguises such as a priest or a policeman to win their trust, and strangles them before drawing a pair of red lips on their foreheads. Detective Morris Brummel works the murders, and a newspaper line in which he calls the latest one well planned flatters Gill, who begins telephoning him to talk about the case. Brummel's mother shares his home and would rather he were a doctor like his brother. Kate Palmer, a tour guide who caught sight of Gill leaving her dead neighbor's apartment, takes an interest in Brummel.
