Megs Jenkins
Biography
Megs Jenkins was an English actress of character parts who worked largely in British film and television. Born in Birkenhead, Cheshire, she trained first as a ballet dancer, though she often played Welsh characters despite being English. She first drew attention as the Welsh friend of the main character in Millions Like Us (1943), and her later films included The Cruel Sea (1953), Green for Danger (1946), The Innocents (1961) and Oliver! (1968). In The Innocents she took the part of the housekeeper, Mrs. Grose, which she repeated in a 1974 television version of The Turn of the Screw. She frequently played comedic roles as well, and television audiences knew her from Worzel Gummidge, a children's series, and from the sitcom Oh No It's Selwyn Froggitt. Her stage career began in 1933 and took in plays by Emlyn Williams; in 1956 she won a Clarence Derwent Award for supporting work in Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge.
