Plot summary
Eddie Ginley's job is calling bingo at a Liverpool hall. The life he wants is that of a stylish investigator, the sort of figure he knows from books and movies. On his thirty-first birthday he places an advertisement in a local newspaper offering his services as a private eye. A telephone call follows, and a man brings him a package that holds a gun, a photograph and a great deal of money. Ginley knows nothing of the practical side of an investigation, yet he puts on a trench coat and trades rapid-fire talk with the people he meets, in the manner of the detectives he admires. His brother is unsupportive and offers him money to abandon his inquiries.

- Gumshoe was the first of only two films with an original score by Andrew Lloyd Webber, the other being The Odessa File in 1974; some of the music had been written for his then-abandoned musical version of Sunset Boulevard and was restored to it when work on the musical resumed years later.
- The film preserves Liverpool buildings that no longer exist, including the employment exchange on Leece Street, while its London scenes were shot in and around the real occult specialist store the Atlantis Bookshop.
