Plot summary
Murray, a middle-aged mobster, looks back over his life, from his days as a bootlegger to his wealth and influence. He credits much of his success and happiness to his friend Joe, who helped him find work with the Mob and through whom he met his wife. Murray is careful never to reveal his profession, though he leaves no doubt that he is a mobster, and he is proud of the position he has reached. He and Joe started out bootlegging together. His own account of it all, delivered in voiceover, is often contradicted by what is shown on screen.
