Robert Urquhart
Biography
Scottish character actor Robert Urquhart built a long career across stage, British television and film. Born in Ullapool, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art after service in the Merchant Navy. He made his stage debut in 1947 in Glasgow and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1948, later appearing in London's West End and on Broadway in Half a Sixpence. His breakthrough role was Paul Krempe in The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), opposite Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. Other films included Knights of the Round Table (1953), The Looking Glass War (1970), and Restless Natives (1985). On television, he worked often in detective and special-agent series, played the lead and worked as script editor on Jango, and appeared in Pathfinders and Brideshead Revisited. He died in 1995.

Early training
Urquhart quit the Merchant Navy in 1942, after his ship had been torpedoed three times, and then found work in the docklands of Glasgow.
First role
Urquhart made his stage debut at Glasgow's Park Theatre in 1947. In the same year, Tyrone Guthrie cast him in The Thrie Estaitis for the first Edinburgh Festival.
Big break
Urquhart's breakthrough came as Paul Krempe in The Curse of Frankenstein in 1957, playing opposite Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee.
Behind the camera
Urquhart took the lead role in Jango and also worked as script editor. Associated Rediffusion made this production, which had a short life, in 1961.
Beyond film
Urquhart was in the cast of the comic musical Half a Sixpence at the Broadhurst Theatre on Broadway from 24 April 1965 to 16 July 1966.
