Plot summary
After Simba becomes king, he and Nala leave their daughter Kiara with Timon and Pumbaa and travel to an oasis for the birth of a second cub. Rafiki arrives to tell Kiara about her grandfather while Timon and Pumbaa add commentary. Long before, Mufasa is a cub whose parents, Masego and Afia, raise him near the sea, and he dreams of the legendary oasis called Milele. A flash flood sweeps him away, and in a wetland he meets Taka, a royal cub. Taka's mother, Queen Eshe, takes him in, and King Obasi tests him with a race between the two cubs; Taka loses on purpose so Mufasa may stay. The pair grow close, though Obasi distrusts outsiders. During a hunt, white lions attack and Mufasa kills one of them; the survivor reaches Kiros, whose Outsiders seek revenge.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Mufasa: The Lion King (2024)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Barry Jenkins cast Blue Ivy Carter as Kiara after hearing an audiobook she recorded for Matthew A. Cherry's Hair Love, but worried she and her mother Beyoncé would not want to act opposite each other. Both were enthusiastic when he proposed it, and it became Blue Ivy's feature film debut.
- Hans Zimmer, Nicholas Britell and Pharrell Williams all dropped out of scoring the film before production; Dave Metzger composed it instead and received sole credit, but reused Zimmer's themes from the earlier Lion King films, including "Under the Stars" and "King of Pride Rock".
- The film is dedicated to James Earl Jones, who voiced Mufasa in the 1994 original and the 2019 remake and died three months before this film's release; as a tribute, his voice is heard briefly during the opening titles.
