Lennie James
Biography
Lennie James is a British actor who began in theater and has worked in film, television and voice work in the Destiny games. Born in Nottingham in 1965 and raised in South London, he trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating in 1988. He won the Clarence Derwent Award in 1992 for his supporting role in The Coup, and he wrote the play Trial and Error as well as the television film Storm Damage and the play The Sons of Charlie Paora. His film work includes Les Misérables (1998), Snatch (2000), 24 Hour Party People (2002), Sahara (2005), Outlaw (2007), Colombiana (2011) and Lockout (2012). On television he is known for Robert Hawkins in Jericho, DCI Tony Gates in Line of Duty and Morgan Jones in The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead. He created and starred in Save Me, and won a BAFTA for Best Actor in 2025 for Mr Loverman.

A first
Lennie James won the Most Prominent Playwright Under 21 prize in the National Youth Theatre-Texaco Playwriting Competition for his play Trial and Error, which Faber and Faber published in 1984.
Behind the camera
Lennie James both created and appeared in Save Me, a Sky Atlantic drama that drew critical praise when it came out in 2018. Save Me Too, the show's second season, took the BAFTA TV Award for Best Drama Series in 2021.
First role
James started out in theater. In 1982, while he was studying social work, the Cockpit Theatre accepted him into a workshop.
Early training
James attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and graduated in 1988. While a student, he helped run a campaign against a plan by the school to expel another student.
