Plot summary
Casey is a timid accountant who lives alone with his dachshund and eats his lunch by himself. Walking home with dog food one night, he is chased and beaten unconscious by men on motorcycles. Frightened, he considers buying a handgun, but the store explains the paperwork and the wait involved. Instead he walks into a neighborhood karate dojo run by a man everyone calls Sensei, who teaches that guns are for the weak. Casey starts as a white belt, spars with a student named Kennith and befriends another named Henry, and meets Anna, the dojo's only female member. When Casey tells Sensei he wants to become the thing that frightens him, Sensei invites him to the dojo's night classes.
