Plot summary
Phil Phillips was the first puppet on the LAPD before he was thrown off the force. Now a private investigator in a Los Angeles where puppets are treated as second-class citizens, he shares an office with his human secretary, Bubbles. A puppet named Sandra White hires him to track down whoever is sending her threatening notes. The lettering on the note leads Phil to a puppet porn shop, where he finds a former children's television actor, Mr. Bumblypants, and where a hooded gunman kills everyone in the building. The LAPD brings in Phil's former partner, Detective Connie Edwards, whose arrival reopens the quarrel that ended their partnership. Edwards calls the killing a robbery, though nothing was taken.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- In May 2018 Sesame Workshop, the organization behind Sesame Street, sued STX Productions over the use of its trademark, including the tagline "No Sesame. All Street", alleging that associating a children's program with an adult comedy would smear its reputation and confuse people.
- There were 125 puppets in the film, 40 of them created specifically for it, and every set was built up so the puppeteers could stand on the floor with straight arms, leaving the human actors a two-foot margin to stay on their path.
