Plot summary
Lady Mary Lasenby is a young English aristocrat, spoiled and used to having her own way. Crichton is the butler of the household, and he is drawn to Mary, who keeps him at a distance because of his lower social class. Lord Loam, Lady Agatha Lasenby and the other members of the family set out with their servants on a cruise, the scullery maid Tweeny among them. The ship goes onto the rocks, and the survivors are flung onto a tropical island. On the island, the aristocrats' ability to survive proves far worse than Crichton's, and the butler becomes the ruler of the stranded group.
