Bebe Daniels
Biography
Bebe Daniels was an American entertainer who acted, sang, danced, wrote and produced. Born in Dallas, she began performing as a child and at nine she played Dorothy Gale in the 1910 short The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. At fourteen Hal Roach hired her for one-reel comedies with Harold Lloyd, starting with Giving Them Fits (1915). She took supporting roles for Cecil B. DeMille in Male and Female (1919), Why Change Your Wife? (1920) and The Affairs of Anatol (1921). By 1924 she appeared with Rudolph Valentino in Monsieur Beaucaire. Radio Pictures then starred her in the Technicolor musical Rio Rita, which made her a musical star; she made Dixiana (1930). Warner Bros. cast her in The Maltese Falcon (1931), 42nd Street (1933) and Counsellor at Law (1933). After leaving Hollywood in 1935, she starred for the BBC in Hi Gang!, appeared in Panama Hattie in London, and received the Medal of Freedom for war service.

First role
At 4 years old, Daniels launched her acting career in the first staging of Edwin Milton Royle's 1905 play The Squaw Man. That same year, she toured in a stage production of Richard III.
Behind the award
After the war, Daniels received the Medal of Freedom from Harry S Truman for her war service. In 1945 she went back to Hollywood briefly to produce films for Hal Roach and Eagle-Lion Films.
