Plot summary
In 1757, during the French and Indian War, French divisions and their Huron allies move against Fort William Henry, the British stronghold commanded by Colonel Munro. Uncas, Chingachgook's son and the last surviving Mohican warrior, is sent to warn the colonel. Cora Munro admires Uncas, which displeases her suitor, Captain Randolph. General Webb sends a relief column of three thousand men, and the Munro sisters, Alice and Cora, travel with it. An Indian runner named Magua offers the women and Major Heyward a shortcut through the wilderness and claims he has lost the trail. In the forest the group meets Uncas, Chingachgook, the scout Hawkeye and the preacher David Gamut. Heyward asks the way to Fort Edward, and the men grow uneasy about Magua's ignorance of the land.
