Thomas Meighan
Biography
Thomas Meighan was an American actor of the silent era and the early talkies who began on the stage, joining the Pittsburgh Stock Company as a juvenile player in 1896. Born in Pittsburgh, he made his Broadway debut in 1900 and won his breakthrough in 1908 opposite William Collier Sr. in The Dictator, then took the lead in The College Widow. He moved into motion pictures in 1914 with Dandy Donovan, the Gentleman Cracksman, and became a star in 1919. His best-known films include Cecil B. DeMille's Male and Female (1919) with Gloria Swanson and Why Change Your Wife? (1920) with Bebe Daniels, and two 1928 silents that Howard Hughes produced, The Mating Call and The Racket, which drew a Best Picture nomination from the Academy. He turned to sound with The Argyle Case in 1929, and Peck's Bad Boy in 1934 was the last film he made. He died in 1936.

Big break
Meighan's breakthrough came in 1908, when he acted with William Collier Sr. in The Dictator. A leading part in The College Widow followed, and that play had a successful Broadway run in the 1907-1908 season.
Behind the camera
In April 1925, Meighan and Swanson made a short film for The Lambs' annual "Spring Gambol." Directed by Allan Dwan and filmed in the Phonofilm sound process, it was a joke for the live event, with Swanson attempting to enter the all-male club.
