Lila Lee

Biography

Lila Lee was an actress who became a leading lady of silent films and maintained her popularity into the sound era. Born in Union Hill, New Jersey, she was enrolled as a child in Gus Edwards' stage shows, where she was called Cuddles, and she spent eight years in vaudeville before Jesse Lasky signed her to Famous Players-Lasky in 1918. Her debut feature, The Cruise of the Make-Believes, won public acclaim, and critics praised her wholesome image and sympathetic roles. In 1922 she played Carmen in Blood and Sand opposite Rudolph Valentino and received the first WAMPAS Baby Stars award. She remained a popular leading lady through the 1920s and successfully moved to talkies, appearing in The Unholy Three (1930) with Lon Chaney Sr. Later relegated to B-movies, she stopped acting after 1936 until her final film, Cottonpickin' Chickenpickers (1967). She was given a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 1960.
