Biography

Theodore Roberts was an American stage and film actor. He was born in San Francisco and made his first stage appearance there in 1880 at the Baldwin Theatre. He later toured the West Coast with a barnstorming company, then briefly left acting to captain a schooner. In the 1890s he returned to the stage, appearing with Fanny Davenport in Gismonda (1894), and went on to appear in The Bird of Paradise (1912). His Broadway work spanned from We'Uns of Tennessee (1899) to Believe Me Xantippe (1913). He entered films in the 1910s and became associated with Cecil B. DeMille's productions. In DeMille's The Ten Commandments (1923), he took the part of Moses in the biblical prologue. In The Cat's Pajamas (1926), one of his last films, he appeared as the heroine's father. Roberts also performed in vaudeville.
