Plot summary
François Villon grows up a celebrated poet, a devoted patriot and a hard-drinking reveler who does not always stay on the right side of the law. In Paris, the Duke of Burgundy works by cunning and deceit to take the French throne, playing on the fears of the superstitious King Louis XI, whose astrologers warn him of war with Burgundy. The king bows to the demand that Charlotte de Vauxcelles, his ward, marry the Burgundian Count Thibault d'Aussigny. On All Fools' Day the crowd elects Villon King of Fools, and when the duke rides in to stop the celebration, Villon has him pulled from his horse. Fearing an insult to Burgundy, the king banishes Villon from Paris. Outside the walls, Villon and his friends Little Jehan and Nicholas take a wagon of food the duke sent to the king.
