Plot summary
Gus Lynch tells High Wolf and his tribe that the new telegraph line will bring an influx of white men who will wipe the tribe out. Lynch makes his living gouging the townsfolk on the supplies they need, and the line threatens that trade. High Wolf leads his braves against a crew stringing up telegraph wires. John Trent, a cavalry scout, receives an incomplete message pointing to a white man behind the recent uprisings, and he is sent in. Alice Keller arrives in town with her uncle Zeke, and when Lynch proposes to her, she tells him she is engaged to John Trent.
