Martin, Jon Voight and Michael Sarrazin were among the last three actors looked at for the part of Joe Buck in Midnight Cowboy.
Big break
In 1967, June Havoc recommended Martin for a contract player role at Universal Studios. She had seen him act while they were both at the New Orleans Repertory Company.
Beyond film
Martin wrote and performed the song "Not for Long" for The Catcher, a 1972 made-for-TV movie. He also helped write the film's title track, which Jackie DeShannon sang.
A first
In 1989, Martin took the part of Daniel in the Spanish film Lluvia de otoño, also known as Autumn Rain. This was the only time he played a role that was not in English.
