Biography

Freddie Bartholomew was a child actor from England who became a popular star in 1930s Hollywood. Born in London in 1924, he studied at the Italia Conti Academy and appeared in minor British films before George Cukor and David O. Selznick cast him as the young title character in MGM's David Copperfield (1935). That success led to roles in Anna Karenina (1935), Little Lord Fauntleroy (1936), Lloyd's of London (1936), and Captains Courageous (1937). Critics and co-stars praised his work, and he placed his handprints at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in 1936 and received a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 1960. After World War II his screen career faded, and he shifted to television, directing and producing programs such as The Andy Griffith Show and several soap operas.

  1. Early training

    Bartholomew appeared in four minor British films, and he also studied acting at London's Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts.

  2. A change of course

    Bartholomew went back to the United States in 1949 and moved into the new medium of television, shifting from performer to host and director. Known as Fred C. Bartholomew, he served as television director of WPIX, an independent station in New York City, from 1949 through 1954.

  3. Behind the camera

    In 1954 Bartholomew joined the New York advertising agency Benton & Bowles as a television producer and director. He worked on shows such as The Andy Griffith Show and several soap operas, and by 1964 he held the post of vice president of radio and television there.
