Madeleine Carroll
Biography
Madeleine Carroll was an English actress who was popular in British and American films in the 1930s and 1940s. Born in West Bromwich, she studied languages at the University of Birmingham before winning a beauty contest and joining Seymour Hicks' company, where she first acted on stage in 1927 in The Lash. Her first screen role came in The Guns of Loos in 1928, and I Was a Spy (1933) won her a best actress award. She became best known as Hitchcock's cool blonde in The 39 Steps (1935), which led to a Paramount contract and films including The General Died at Dawn (1936), Secret Agent (1936), The Prisoner of Zenda (1937) and My Favorite Blonde (1942). Later credits included An Innocent Affair (1948) and The Fan (1949).
