Plot summary
Sergeant Gerry Boyle is a Garda Síochána officer policing the Connemara district in western Ireland. Crass and confrontational, he drinks and takes drugs on duty, is well read, and shows a softer concern for his ailing mother, Eileen. With a new subordinate, Aidan McBride, he investigates a murder whose evidence appears to point toward an occult serial killer. An American FBI agent, Wendell Everett, arrives to brief the Garda on the hunt for four Irish drug traffickers, among them Francis Sheehy-Skeffington, thought to be awaiting a large cocaine shipment from Jamaica by sea. In Everett's presentation Boyle sees the man whose murder he has been looking into. Everett proposes that the two of them team up to track the gang down.
