Plot summary
In 1961 Montana, retired sheriff George Blackledge and his wife Margaret share a ranch with their son James, his wife Lorna and the baby Jimmy. One afternoon James's horse comes back without him, and George finds James's body beside a creek. In 1963, Lorna marries Donnie Weboy, needing his support with Jimmy. While shopping, Margaret sees Donnie grab Jimmy's arm and strike Lorna. A neighbor says the Weboys have left town, so she packs to rescue Jimmy and George reluctantly joins her.
