Biography

Gary Howard Klar was an American actor best remembered for his turn as Private Steel in George A. Romero's zombie film Day of the Dead (1985). Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, he played football in college and briefly at the professional level before deciding to become an actor. He made his screen debut in a small part as a cameraman in Hero at Large (1980), and went on to character roles in films including Big (1988), Married to the Mob (1988) and Hackers (1995), along with minor parts in Three Men and a Baby. He also appeared in the music video for Cyndi Lauper's She Bop. Klar returned to Day of the Dead for a 2015 convention panel marking the film's 30th anniversary. He died in 2020.
