Roscoe Lee Browne
Biography
Roscoe Lee Browne was an American actor and director who launched his stage career with New York City's Shakespeare Festival Theater in the 1950s. Born in Woodbury, New Jersey, he resisted stereotypical Black roles and worked steadily on stage and television, including in Leland Hayward's satirical NBC series That Was the Week That Was, and toured the United States with a poetry performance piece. His first movie role came as an offscreen camera operator in The Connection (1961). He became a frequent television guest star from the late 1960s and appeared in films such as The Cowboys (1972) and The World's Greatest Athlete (1973). He narrated Babe (1995) and Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties, and won a Primetime Emmy for The Cosby Show and an NAACP Image Award, with a Tony nomination for Two Trains Running. He died in 2007.

Roscoe Lee Browne left his job selling wine for Schenley Import Corporation in 1956 to become a full-time professional actor.
First role
Browne landed his first stage roles in 1956 as The Soothsayer and Pindarus in Julius Caesar and a servant in The Taming of the Shrew, produced by Joseph Papp for New York City's first Shakespeare in the Park.
Behind the camera
A Hand Is On The Gate, a stage production Browne wrote, also served as his directorial debut in 1966. Cicely Tyson, James Earl Jones, and Moses Gunn were among its cast.
Beyond film
In 1977 Browne narrated The Story of Star Wars, a record album produced by George Lucas and Alan Livingston that used the film's dialogue and sound effects to tell an abridged version of the story.
A change of course
Browne studied at Lincoln University, a historically black school in Pennsylvania, and was an All-American on its track and field team, the Lincoln Lions. He received a bachelor's degree in 1946.
