Plot summary
Lance Sterling is a cocky agent of H.T.U.V., an agency of honor, trust, unity and valor, who regards himself as the world's greatest spy. He goes to Japan to take an attack drone from arms dealer Katsu Kimura, ignoring the orders of director Joy Jenkins, and the buyer, a cybernetically enhanced terrorist named Killian, is on the scene. At headquarters, Lance confronts Walter Beckett, a socially inept MIT graduate whose nonlethal gadgets are built into his suit, and fires him before Walter can explain his newest invention, biodynamic concealment. The briefcase Lance brought back holds nothing, and internal affairs agent Marcy Kappel shows him footage of himself leaving with the drone. Labeled a traitor, he escapes and goes looking for Walter.

- Spies in Disguise was the last film to be produced by Blue Sky Studios before The Walt Disney Company closed the studio down on April 7, 2021.
- On October 9, 2017 it was announced that development was underway on a film based on the 2009 animated short Pigeon: Impossible, with Will Smith and Tom Holland set to voice the lead characters.
- The film's budget was never disclosed, but IndieWire estimated that it may have been $100 million or more, based on all of the previous Blue Sky Studios films.
- An original song, “Then There Were Two”, performed by Ronson and Anderson .Paak, was released in November 2019; two days later came the album Mark Ronson Presents the Music of Spies in Disguise, with five new songs plus Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock's “It Takes Two”.
- The film was dedicated to Joe Kwong, who worked at Walt Disney Animation Studios and Blue Sky Studios before his death.
