Plot summary
In April 1942, a Japanese submarine off the American west coast dives in a hurry and leaves sailor Matsuo Yomma in the water, wounded. Duke Cooper and three friends play at soldiers in the woods and patrol the shore for Japanese submarines. Willy Tanaka, one of them, is a fourth generation Japanese American whose mother Kimiko and grandfather Abe are to be sent with him to an internment camp. The boys come upon the sailor unconscious in an abandoned factory and weigh whether to hand him over to the FBI or to save him.
