Plot summary
Virgie Cary is a young girl on a Southern plantation, where she lives with her mother and her father, Herbert Cary, a Confederate captain. Her sixth birthday party is interrupted when the Civil War begins, and Cary leaves to report for duty. Uncle Billy, who is enslaved on the plantation, tells Virgie he has heard of a man in the North who means to free the slaves, though he cannot say what that will mean for them. Union soldiers reach the plantation, and Virgie hits their commander, Colonel Morrison, with a slingshot; he admires the shot and warns her not to try it again. When her father slips back to see the family, Sergeant Dudley and his men search the house for food and valuables, and Morrison makes Dudley apologize and orders the goods returned.

- The slingshot scene in The Littlest Rebel was written in by screenwriter Edwin Burke after he learned that Shirley Temple, who played Virgie, had a natural talent with a slingshot; she was perfectly on target and needed only one take.
- While trying to keep noisy doves on the prison set, Shirley Temple asked "Why doesn't someone make Mussolini stop?"; someone overheard, the remark reached the newspapers, and it angered Mussolini.
