Plot summary
In 2001, the Taliban rule Afghanistan, and eleven-year-old Parvana lives in Kabul with her family. Her father Nurullah, a former schoolteacher who lost a leg in the Soviet-Afghan war, sells goods in the market, and Parvana helps him there. Idrees, once his student, accuses him of an insult, and Nurullah is arrested. Women may not go out without a male relative, leaving her mother Fattema, her sister Soraya and baby brother Zaki without anyone to earn or shop. Parvana cuts her hair, calls herself Atesh and claims to be Nurullah's nephew.
