Plot summary
In Glasgow in 1987, Carla, a Nicaraguan exile, climbs onto a bus driven by George Lennox without paying the fare. Over coffee she tells him almost nothing about her life or her country, and she has nowhere settled to stay, so George arranges a room for her at a friend's flat. Carla's back is scarred, her family is dispersed and her boyfriend, Antonio, is missing. George decides the two of them should travel to Nicaragua, where the Contra war is being fought, to learn what became of Antonio and of her family, and he begins to learn about the U.S.-sponsored insurgency against the Sandinistas.
