Plot summary
In 1965, an older Avik recounts his life to a mapmaker in the Arctic. It begins in 1931 in the settlement of Nunataaq, where the British cartographer Walter Russell takes the boy Avik on as a guide. Avik contracts tuberculosis, and Russell, to ease his own guilt, takes him to a clinic in Montreal. There Avik meets Albertine, a Métis girl, and the two fall in love, until the Mother Superior who runs the clinic separates them. Back north, Avik meets Russell again, who is hunting a wrecked German U-boat off the coast, and Avik asks him to find out where Albertine has gone. Avik has carried a chest X-ray of her since their separation. He believes he brings misfortune to those around him.
