- According to Lake Bell, almost no notable film trailers have employed female voice-over talent, the exception being Gone in 60 Seconds (2000), which used Melissa Disney.
- After an unfruitful pursuit, Bell's agent told her she should just direct the script herself. That overwhelmed her, so she wrote and directed a short instead, Worst Enemy (2011), whose admission to Sundance gave her the confidence to direct.
- The "nose kiss" scene was suggested by Ken Marino, and it made Bell laugh so much that she told him he would need to do it twice.
- Bell wrote the screenplay with particular people in mind, saying she was inspired to cast not only great comedians but people with a complex life; even so, Notaro's part was originally written for a male.
