John Junkin
Biography
John Junkin was an English actor and scriptwriter who worked for decades in radio, television and film, mostly in comedy. Born in Ealing, he trained as a teacher and taught in the East End while sending jokes and sketches to radio, and in the mid-1950s he wrote for television with Terry Nation on shows including The Idiot Weekly, Price 2d and A Show Called Fred. In 1960 he joined Joan Littlewood's theater workshop at Stratford East, taking the lead in the stage production of Sparrers Can't Sing, and he later appeared with the Royal Court company. On screen he played stony-faced figures of petty authority, among them Shake in A Hard Day's Night (1964), with parts in The Pumpkin Eater (1964), Hot Enough for June (1964), Brass Target (1978) and The Football Factory (2004), his last film. He also wrote for Morecambe and Wise with Barry Cryer and hosted his own series, Junkin.

A first
Junkin voiced Mr Shifter, a chimp in the PG Tips tea advertisement, and the Guinness Book of Records lists him for it. That commercial series was the longest running on television.
Big break
Harry H. Corbett suggested in 1960 that Junkin join Joan Littlewood's Stratford East Theatre Workshop. There he took the lead in the original stage production of Sparrers Can't Sing.
A change of course
In 1964 Junkin recorded radio programs on land for Radio Caroline, a ship-based pirate radio station that was then new.
