Plot summary
In 1935, Mattie Appleyard leaves the West Virginia State Penitentiary at Glory after forty years. He has a glass eye he calls Tighe, and a check for $25,452.32 in wages for his prison work. Lee Cottrill, a bank robber, and the young convict Johnny Jesus are released the same day. Mattie and Cottrill have long planned a grocery store of their own in a coal camp that has only a company store. A prison captain, Doc Council, who also teaches Sunday school, escorts the men to the train station. The check can be cashed only in person at the Glory bank, and Council has already arranged with the banker Homer Grindstaff that it never will be.
