Plot summary
Dickey, an American gangster, and his accomplice Albie, shot during a robbery that went wrong, are on the run and looking for help. The rising tide cuts off the causeway, the only road to Lindisfarne, the tidal island in Northumberland where they take refuge in the castle on the hill. George, an eccentric middle-aged Englishman, lives there with his young French wife, Teresa, and they become the unwilling hosts of the two men. Dickey telephones his underworld boss, Katelbach, to arrange for someone to come for him and Albie, disconnects the phone lines and holds the couple hostage in their own home until the next day.

- Cul-de-sac was shot on location in 1965 on Lindisfarne, off the Northumberland coast, and Lindisfarne Castle, which doubled as the couple's home in the film, is now a National Trust property that the public can tour and which remains largely unchanged.
