Plot summary
Mike Wilson, an American reporter, and Howard Meade, a photographer, are traveling by rail to a music festival in Salzburg when their carriage comes uncoupled and rolls across the frontier into Gudavia, a one-village dictatorship that has had no trains for five years. Troops board and arrest them, and the men cannot find Gudavia on any map. Commander Koerner has them released and lodged in a hotel, where Meade's telegram is torn up unsent. Doctor Bronski runs a school where the children's brains are treated with gamma rays. Anna, who works at the hotel, passes them a note asking that the children of Gudavia be saved and Bronski destroyed.
