Plot summary
Alice Tate is a wealthy Manhattan wife and mother married to Doug for sixteen years, with the children mostly left to a nanny. A brief encounter with jazz musician Joe leaves her attracted and guilty, and the inner conflict shows up as a backache. She consults herbalist Dr. Yang. Under hypnosis, Alice says she first wanted Doug for his looks and money, and she also reveals her feelings for Joe. Dr. Yang gives her herbs that make her act on the attraction, but after the effect wears off she is horrified and skips the meeting they had planned.
