Plot summary
Mark Hogancamp builds Marwen, a miniature Belgian town in the Second World War, out of dolls, and photographs the scenes he stages there. The dolls stand for the people around him: himself as Cap'n Hogie, the women who protect him, and German soldiers modeled on the five men who beat him. The beating, after he told them he liked to wear women's shoes, left him with memory loss and post-traumatic stress. He studies photo albums for the life he cannot recall. His lawyer telephones: the sentencing of the five men is that week. A new neighbor, Nicol, moves in across the street.
